Dungeon Warlock Marketplace
The Problem:
Tabletop roleplaying games are growing in popularity, but it can be difficult for game masters to have the time to plan sessions for their players, or for new GMs to learn how to prepare a session.
The Goal:
Create an open marketplace where GMs can upload and sell their modules and one shots to other GMs in need, and to build a site that has intuitive filters so GMs can find the perfect module for their player's needs.
My Role:
UX Designer
Responsibilities:
Conducting interviews, paper and digital wireframing, low and high-fidelity prototyping, conducting usability studies, accounting for accessibility, iterating on designs and responsive design.
User Research: Summary
I conducted a survey, which was filled out by experienced Game Masters, identifying the tools they wished they had better access to.
I then conducted two interviews where I focused on what were common pain points among GMs, and what their goals were when putting content together for their players.
From my survey, I learned that about 50% of GMs would be interested in purchasing modules with built in assets to be uploaded to Virtual Tabletops, and that all DMs wanted to be able to purchase module packs which included maps and monster stats.
Common User Pain Points:
User Persona:
Waffles is an inexperienced Game Master, who needs an easy way to search for one shot modules because her friends want to run a different one shot every month.
User Journey Map:
Beginning the Design:
Sitemap:
My goal was to design a website which would be streamlined, and allow users to filter through content with ease.
Paper Wireframes:
When designing the marketplace page, I wanted to focus on what details would give the users the most useful information at a glance.
Digital Wireframes:
The homepage needed to show links of all the content that users would be able to purchase.
I designed the market page to give users plenty of information about what was included in the content.

Usability Study: Round 1
Usability Study Findings:
Refining the Design
Before Usability Study:
After Usability Study:
Users felt overwhelmed when the first page of the marketplace showed modules of multiple gaming systems, so I added a page where they could select their system to get started.
Before Usability Study:
After Usability Study:
Users wanted to see module reviews displayed higher on the page.
Desktop Mockups:
Mobile Mockups:
High-Fidelity Prototype
Going Forward:
Impact:
Game Masters will be able to find modules which meet their user needs, and can view reviews to feel reassured that they are buying a legitimate product.
What I learned:
Understanding how my users want to filter their searches and how to incorporate that into a search engine hierarchy
Next Steps:
-
Design the flow that users will follow to upload and sell their own modules
-
Conduct another round of usability studies
